Choosing the Right Floor

Every room in your home has a specific role. It is important to consider that role when choosing a floor.

Kitchens

  • Kitchens are high traffic areas and usually have to deal with dirt being tracked in from an outside entry.
  • Cooking spills are frequent, so cleaning the floor should be relatively simple.
  • Nonslip flooring may be helpful.

Solutions

  • Vinyl is quite resilient and is a bit more forgiving than other hard surfaces in the event of a dropped glass or plate.
  • Ceramic, laminate, and hardwood are also excellent choices. A rug may be used to soften such surfaces.

Bathroom

  • In case of an overflow from the bathtub, toilet, or sink, waterproof flooring is a necessity.
  • Washable flooring promotes ease of cleaning.
  • Nonslip flooring is required.

Possible Solutions:

  • Vinyl is usually the floor used in bathrooms.
  • Ceramic tile is another option.
  • Newer hardwoods and laminates can be sufficiently waterproofed for bathroom use. Be sure to use with nonslip mats or rugs.

      Living Room

  • Highest traffic and most often viewed room in a home. This where flooring ties the room and the home’s décor together.
  • Multi-purpose room, varying in use from receiving room to den.
  • Traffic resistant and fashionable flooring is necessary.

·         Possible Solutions:

·         Carpet is an excellent choice for a living room.

  • Varieties of fibers, cuts, and colors provide carpet for any occasion.
  • Sturdy and Stylish hardwood flooring can be used with or without a rug.

Dining Room

  • Dining room floors must be traffic and stain resistant.

Possible Solutions:

  • Darker carpets are an acceptable option. Lighter colors may show stains easily.
  • Laminate and hardwood are excellent dining room floors.

Bedroom

  • Furniture, bed clothes, and wall coverings generally overshadow the floor.
  • Bedrooms are generally low traffic. Staining is less of a problem.

Possible Solutions:

  • Carpet is usually laid in bedrooms.
  • Wood and laminate are also attractive options when used with a rug.

·         Neutral colors that can easily adapt to changing décor are helpful.

Stairways and Halls

  • Very high traffic areas.
  • Susceptible to stains and wearing.

Possible Solutions:

  •    Parquet patterned wood

·         Ceramic tile

·         Laminate with a patterned rug.
